Everyone Has A Story

The people that we encounter everyday are not just a bunch of mindless faces.  In fact, each individual has a story to tell.

This short video shows us what might be under the surface as we experience numerous casual encounters from day to day.

I must admit that I have had many false assumptions about people over the years only to realize how arrogant, superficial, or childish I was in order to make those assumptions.

What about you?  Have you walked in those shoes?  You make assumptions about someone and then you find out their story and it blows your assumptions out of the water.

Whew!  I feel much better knowing that I’m not alone.

What if we approached people with a different attitude?  Instead of making assumptions, we could show interest in their story.  Instead of determining that someone is our enemy, wouldn’t it be better to discover why they responded to what we said.  Instead of deciding someone is a lousy parent for not having the same values as us, wouldn’t it be better to know why they make the choices they do?

Isn’t that what we want from others?  We want them to know our story.  That gets to the heart of human existence.  We want to be known and we want to know others.

How would your opinion of the people in your life change if you took time to know their story?

Thanks for this writing Larry. These are such excellent points. I do think that we, as humans in general, do this FAR too often. We judge (or are judged) without even a second thought. Like you and the video mentions, we cannot begin to comprehend what is going on, or has gone on in someone else’s life by a mere glance or stare. These are other people just as real as I am, and deserve respect in the same way I think I do. Thanks for the thought-provoking writing.

  2. I can nearly guarantee that my assumptions of people are dead wrong nearly every time. Whether I think someone is immediately the best guy I have ever met or vice versa.

I know God has a plan for everyone and I try to just find that good part of everyone. The part that Jesus died for. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes not–but it’s always there. If Jesus died for them, then I can try to love them.
