Getting What We Never Wanted

Thoughts are taken from Genesis 11:1-9.

When we seek to make a name for ourselves it can sometimes get us the very thing we never wanted.

The people in this passage said in verse four, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Then we read in verse eight, “So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.”  The thing that they did not want is the the thing that they ended up receiving.

A father that says, “I don’t want children that are not empathetic towards children, and I don’t want children that are irreverent towards authority,” but pursues long hours at the office to earn promotion after promotion and pay raise after pay raise can get exactly what he doesn’t want.  Long hours given to the company can deprive children of a father to help them learn discipline, compassion, or obedience, leaving a father with children that are apathetic towards humanity and obstinate towards authority.

Seeking to make a name for ourselves is a selfish desire.  In many areas of our lives we can get what we do not want when we selfishly pursue those things that inflate our ego, our portfolio, our career, or our possessions.  Instead we should seek to honor God.
