The following is the second post of a three part series covering the notes I took during Jim Collins presentation at the Chik-fil-a Leadercast. Here are parts one and three:
Six Thoughts From Jim Collins On “Greatness” From The Chik-Fil-A Leadercast
Jim Collins Shares Five Stages Of A Failing Company At The Chik-Fil-A Leadercast
- Build a packet of greatness. Don’t look at future opportunities. Do the assignment that is in front of you with excellence.
- Do your diagnostics. (You can pick up diagnostics tools on Jim Collins website.)
- Evaluate how many of your key seats are filled with the right people. Now develop a plan to get to 100%.
- Build a personal board of directors. Companies have them and so should you. Choose wise people to help mentor you.
- Turn off electronic gadgets and create quiet time to think.
- Ask the right questions to the right people. Don’t always show up with the right answers.
- Have a to do list and a stop doing list. Leaders of great companies are more concerned about their stop doing list.
- Experiment with removing titles. The right people do not have jobs they have responsibilities.
- Articulate or re-articulate the core values. This is who you are and it needs to be clear.
- Set BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) – these are goals that will require hard work and sacrifice to accomplish.
What do you think about this list? Is there anything you would add or take away?

I really appreciate number 4. I think very few people have those who are close enough to them to talk with them about everything. Chose wise mentors who not only give you advice about how to lead a company, church, etc, but also how to lead your family and lead as a person of integrity. Great advice!
JD I think you are right. Very few of us do have people close enough to us that we can confide in them. I was thinking about why that was. I came up with a couple of things.
1) We do not put in the time to have close relationships
2) We do not open up and let people in
What do you think?
Number 4 also struck a chord with me. A personal board is something I have been thinking about for quite some time and just need to take the next step and hire myself a board! Number 6 is something that my wife has mastered–she asks people the most thoughtful and insightful questions–I need to do a much better job of asking great questions and listening thoroughly to the answers!
I think #6 is essential for those of us that want to be successful bloggers. If we ask the right people the right questions then we can have great insight on what topics to write about and what the best resources are.
