Why don’t you pray more than you do?
Many of you are reading this and right now you are going through a mental list of the things that keep you from praying. Perhaps you are thinking that you just allow too many things to crowd your schedule and you don’t allow enough time. Or maybe you are thinking about all of the unexpected things that have come up this past week that dwindled away all of your spare time.
No doubt you and I could come up with five or ten reasons off the top of our head if we would just stop and think for a few minutes. However, the reasons we give, like the one’s above aren’t really reasons. They are merely symptoms of a deeper reason why we do not engage in prayer more often than we do.
-
You believe that prayer is a waste of time.
-
It is not one of those things that can be measured so you are not convinced that it produces any tangible results.
-
God has not answered your prayers in the past so why waste your time now and in the future.
-
You do not really want God involved in your decision making process.
-
Many of you have already made up your minds on how you want to live, spend money, and treat others. If you stop and seek God’s counsel you just might have to change what you are doing. As far as you are concerned ignorance is bliss. If God doesn’t have the chance to weigh in then you don’t have to worry about whether your choices are pleasing to Him.
-
There is unrepentant sin in your life.
-
You know there are things in your life that you are hiding and you don’t want anyone else to know. This puts in a state of mind just like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden where you are choosing to hide from the presence of God.
Prayer is one of the primary ways that we connect with God. If you find that you are not spending time in prayer then cut through the symptoms that we often look at and get to the real reason. Only then can you deal with the issues and free your heart to chase after God.
