For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
– Colossians 1:16 (NIV)
When we lose an accurate image of who God is, we will undoubtedly go astray. We see the evidence of that throughout the Scriptures, as well as throughout human history. We even see it playing out in our generation.
If later generations are asked to describe this generation in one word, I will argue that word will be “self.” We live at a time in history where we are self absorbed and Christians are not exempt.
Just like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, there is a rejection of God by asserting our independence. Some might argue, “isn’t that the American way?” No, it isn’t. There is a huge distinction between self-absorption and individual rights and responsibilities. But that is a lesson for another time.
For today, our culture, including the Church, seems to have forgotten who God is, and we are suffering the consequences. This often happens in an affluent and prosperous culture. People are often tempted towards self-reliance and not humility before God. We would do well to remember that God is sovereign, and there is no good outcome, individually or collectively, when we reject Him.
Biblical writers went to great lengths to remind their audience who God is, so let us be reminded today that He is above all things. Let us approach Him with humility and see Him with the awe and wonder He deserves.
