DAILY DEVOTION | 1 Corinthians 1:17

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

– ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭(NIV)

Those who are called to preach and teach should not confuse what God has called them to do. In many of our churches, the role of pastor is the role of employee, whereby they form a job description without regard to spiritual gifting. Often times, the person hired to preach is asked to do things outside their primary gifting and it only hurts the church.

In the book of Acts, there was a complaint about certain Jewish women being treated unfairly with food distribution, and the Twelve told the body to find Spirit filled people among them to do the work. Notice, they did not lead the effort, nor did they expect to be involved in the process. They were only concerned with what God had called them to do—preaching the Word and prayer.

Too many churches ask their pastor to operate in ways he was not gifted by God. Why? Because they are seeking an employee, not a spiritual leader. They want someone who is solely accountable to the church and responsible to his job description, instead of being accountable to God and responsible for his calling.

I dare say that many churches have organized themselves more like a business and not enough like the body God intended. Your pastor is no different than others, he is narrowly gifted. He should not be asked to emphasize roles outside where God has called him and gifted him.

Just like the preacher, or teachers, you are gifted to contribute.‬ It is important to discover how God has created you and how you fit into the body of Christ. Why? Because you are meant to help the body, the family of God, function at full capacity.
