Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
– Galatians 6:7-8 (NIV)
All of us will step over from life to death, as we know it. It is the one thing none of us can outsmart or out run. It is inevitable and becomes the great equalizer for all of mankind. No matter what else takes place while you are here, we all have the same ending for this life—which is death.
The moment of death will be a very sobering moment for all of us. Nothing more can be added to or taken away from our words and deeds. Those that are left behind will grieve our passing and soon we will be forgotten. In one to two generations no one will remember our name. Isn’t it baffling then that so many of us strive to “leave our mark,” “to make a big splash,” or “to make a name for ourselves,” since we will only be forgotten when it is all said and done?
On the other hand, there is the life that comes next. Many will live a life that despises the things of God, while others will simply ignore Him. Some will work hard to discredit the things of God, the Church, and the Bible, and others will not care one way or the other. This verse reminds us that the author of life (and death) cannot be mocked. What may seem like a laughing matter today, will be a moment of great consequence when each of us meet death in this life. For in that moment, we will reap the consequences of our choices. We will reap either destruction, or eternal life with Jesus.
If you have never contemplated what is on the other side of this life, let me encourage you to ask those questions. If I can help, please reach out. If you have rejected God, or the Church, and would like to talk, please message me. In either case I would be happy to buy lunch (or dinner), chat on the phone, or answer your questions privately.
To the followers of Christ, who may be weary, take heart. You have a reward awaiting you. For as much as destruction is the inheritance of the ungodly, eternal life is awaiting you. You may be met with scorn and ridicule here; you may be met with shame and persecution now; but one day, it will all be in the past and the reward will far outweigh the cost. The very opposite of the inheritance promised to those who mock the things of God.
